Four Major Roles of a Supervisor In Now That I'm a Supervisor, the first class in the supervisory academy, we covered the following Four Major Roles of a Supervisor. Do you remember them?The first is Developing. We noted, "One indicator of whether a supervisor is effective in his/her position is the ability to develop employees beyond their current capabilities." What have you done since our introductory class to make sure your employees are developing skills, abilities, goals, etc.? The second major role of a supervisor is Motivating. We noted you cannot make someone be motivated. However, you can create a motivating climate. Your third major role is Planning. If you want to know where you are going, you have to have a plan to get there. And finally, Evaluating. Not only are you responsible for your own work getting done, you are also responsible for the work of others. Constant evaluation makes sure the work is getting done properly and on time. Take a few moments and consider which role needs your immediate focus. Then answer this question, "What is one small step I can take today to strengthen this role as I continue growing in my abilities as a supervisor?
